Of Peanuts and Monkeys, Again and Again

So the Gahmen of Singapore thinks our Ministers, who’re already the highest salaried politicians in the world, should earn about $2m a year, instead of the approximately $1.2m they do now. This takes me back (again!) to a piece I wrote in 2003…. (Sigh!)
Why the fish should they peg public sector salaries to that of certain private sector professions? In the private sector, your worth (notionally at least) can be proven by performance in the market. Not so with the public sector.
But maybe they can peg it to increases in GDP of the country and factor in things like inflation, etc. That would be a more reasonable performance indicator for our leadership, wouldn’t it? Pegging their percentage pay rise strictly to the percentage rise in GDP… it’s certainly more proportionate than the arbitrary way it’s being done now.

I have the same thoughts as you do. I felt like writing to the ST but then again, will they even publish? Yet IF they do publish what I have to say, will I get sued? I really dunno but it never fails to tick me off why the government ministers have such high salaries. It’s no longer just an issue about do they deserve such over the top salaries. SIngapore did progress. But does it justify for the salary? Using perks and such to attract ‘talent’s makes me question, Do they work for the people or the salary?
Being a simple citizen, I see things from a simple mans perspective and honestly I can’t understand why they are so highly paid. If the government were to run the country like a corporation. Then we as the citizens of singapore should have a say in this issue cos afterall, we are the tax payers as well that contribute to their salaries.
